R.J. Reynolds Requested To Remove Camel Crush Bold Cigarette Brand

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested cigarette maker R.J. Reynolds to remove their Camel Crush Bold cigarette brand out the market. The FDA behaved under a major provision of the 2009 law that calls for prior FDA review and authorization before tobacco makers are allowed to advertise new or altered products.
The conclusion, which was released on September 15, represents the first time when the agency has requested a tobacco manufacturer to eliminate a key cigarette brand from the market since it was provided regulatory power over tobacco products by the 2009 law. This step sets an essential precedent that could cover other brands as the FDA operates to stop the launch of smoking products to the market that may be more interesting to youth, more addictive or more dangerous.
The 2009 law bans the launch of a new or changed tobacco product until the manufacturer demonstrates to the FDA that the product is either “proper for the protection of public health” or “considerably equivalent” to a product already available on the market. Producers should also demonstrate that the product “does not present different questions of public health.”
Besides Camel Crush Bold, the FDA also released orders that will end any sale and distribution of three other cigarette products presently advertised by R.J. Reynolds: Pall Mall Deep Set Recessed Filter, Pall Mall Deep Set Recessed Filter Menthol and Vantage Tech cigarettes. The FDA established that these tobacco products were not considerably equal to present products.
The FDA identified that R.J. Reynolds was unable to illustrate that these products do not “increase distinct questions of public health,” mainly due to the larger amounts of menthol, the addition of sugars and some other sweeteners.
Camel is one of the three hottest cigarette brands among youth smokers, with 15.1 % giving preference to Camel, based on the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Camel Crush is an extension of the brand range with a capsule in the filter that produces menthol when crushed.
